EU to convene oil, gas supply groups after Iran war lifts prices

Mar 9, 2026, 07:52 GMT+0

The European Union will hold meetings of its oil and gas supply coordination groups on Thursday after the Iran war pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel, a European Commission spokesperson said on Monday.

The groups will assess the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy markets and review member states’ oil supply levels. EU countries are required to maintain oil stocks equivalent to at least 90 days of consumption.

The coordination groups bring together EU government representatives to monitor supply security and coordinate response measures during energy crises.

Hegseth says US could escalate Iran war with 2,000-lb bombs

Mar 9, 2026, 04:17 GMT+0

"We're willing to go as far as we need to in order to be successful," Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told CBS News on the Iran war. “There’ll be a point where they’ll have no choice but to surrender.”

Hegseth said "this is only just the beginning."

"The ability for us to be up over the top and hunting with more conventional munitions, gravity bombs, 500-pound, 1,000-pound, 2,000-pound bombs on military targets-- that-- we haven't even really begun to start that effort of the campaign, which is gonna showcase even more how-- how we will execute on those objectives," Hegseth added.
