Iran's leader Sunday showed the first public sign of readiness to compromise with the West over the nuclear issue, while maintaining enmity with the United States.

In a televised speech Sunday morning Ali Khamenei said that "Negotiations with the enemy at a certain juncture does not necessarily mean surrendering." The anti-Western ruler of Iran tried to convey the message to his hardliner supporters that although he is prepared for another round of "heroic flexibility"in a bid to have sanctions lifted, his opposition to the United States is unwavering.

"Not surrendering to the enemies, is one of the principles of the Islamic revolution. However, holding talks and negotiating with the enemy at a certain juncture does not mean surrendering to it. We have never surrendered so far, and we never will," Khamenei said.

Khamenei’s statement comes after many politicians and pundits in Iran and abroad have been saying for years that Iran should try direct negotiations with the US, but Khamenei explicitly banned it in 2018.

Portraying the United States as the Islamic Republic's biggest enemy, Khamenei said: "America’s deep hostility and spite toward Iran stems from the Iranian people’s revolutionary, religious viewpoint on the current issues of the world. That is why the US, the leading “arrogant power”, opposes the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Claiming that US stances vis-a-vis Tehran is based on miscalculations, Khamenei reiterated: "The US system of calculation is defective. It cannot fathom the truths about Iran. When their calculation of the existing situation is wrong, their decisions are wrong too. This is why they have been unsuccessful so far and they will continue to be unsuccessful, God willing."
Based on his accounts of certain episodes in Iran's history in the 18th and 19th and 20th centuries, Khamenei said that only the grand ulema [prominent Shiite clerics] are capable of mobilizing masses of the people against big powers. Khamenei concluded that this reveals why "arrogant powers are against religion, clerics” and Shiite political Islam.

Khamenei reiterated: "The United States is basically against the Islamic regime in Iran because Washington knows that this system is the outcome of religion and is a manifestation of the Iranian nation's religious beliefs." He added: "Religious zeal based on reason turns threats into opportunities. An example of this is the war imposed by Saddam on Iran. The US, USSR, NATO, etc. united in this international war to defeat Iran, but the people’s zeal that is based on faith defeated all of them."

Meanwhile, expounding on his conspiracy theory about the West, Khamenei said that "The enemies are trying to erode Iranians' responsiveness to the principles of the Islamic revolution through a massive propaganda campaign on cyberspace and foreign-based [Persian] media. However, he did not mention that widespread and systematic corruption among clerics and officials has vastly contributed to the erosion of the underlying beliefs in the ruling system.

He also did not mention that many blame his regime's mismanagement for wasting a wealthy country’s resources, or criticism that his own unreasonable ambitions led to wasting billions of dollars on a nuclear program that has had no positive outcome for the people in more than four decades.

Nonetheless, he warned Iranian intellectuals that "It is unfair to say that the principles of the Islamic revolution do not serve the people's interest and do not guarantee their future."

Khamenei's critics even those such as former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have said on various occasions that nothing has remained of the main principles of the revolution, namely independence, freedom and an Islamic republic.

Critics have often argued that the regime's over-reliance on Russia and China and massive concessions to them has undermined Iran's independence. Meanwhile, thousands of political prisoners languishing in Iranian prisons, one of whom died in custody on Saturday because of neglect, bear witness that there is no freedom of expression in Iran. Critics say nothing has remained of the idea of a Republic in Iran particularly after the latest round of presidential election where everyone knew the winner months before the voting day.

Taliban FM Visiting Iran Will Meet Opposition Figures - Sources

Jan 8, 2022, 22:51 GMT+0

Two sources have told Afghanistan International that the Taliban foreign minister visiting Iran will have a meeting with opposition figures Ahmad Massoud and former Herat governor Ismail Khan.

Taliban's acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi arrived in Tehran at the head of a high-ranking delegation on Saturday to hold talks with senior Iranian officials.

Later two reliable sources told Afghanistan International that Mutaqqi arrived in Tehran with the invitations of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC). A photo taken in Kabul airport before his departure showed a Mahan airline plane waiting on the tarmac. Mahan is an IRGC-affiliated company.

Representatives of Afghanistan’s Resistance Front did not comment on the possible meeting between Massoud and Motaqqi. The Taliban acting foreign minister had previously offered truce and peace to the resistance Front.

Afghanistan’s economic situation has badly deteriorated since the fall of its internationally recognized government and the Taliban desperately need foreign assistance. Iran has insisted that they should form an inclusive government.

Iran has close ties with the anti-Taliban figures and also cordial relations with the Taliban, whose victory in August was seen by Tehran as a defeat for the United States.

Ottawa Calls Iran's Downing Of Airliner In 2020 'A Canadian Tragedy'

Ottawa has called Iran's downing of a Ukrainian airliner two years ago “a Canadian tragedy” and has called for justice, in a statement to Iran International.

Jason Kung, a spokesperson of Canada’s foreign ministry said that “The families, and the victims, are at the heart of our efforts in the pursuit of transparency, justice and accountability for this tragedy.”

He added, “the Government of Canada is outraged at this refusal to negotiate from the Islamic Republic of Iran. To us, this is a clear indication that Iran plans to continue to shirk its responsibilities, thereby challenging the international rule-based order and refusing to give the families and victims the justice they deserve. We will not stand for this affront to the memories of the 176 innocent victims.”

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard fired two missiles at Ukrainian International Airlines flight PS752 in the morning of January 8, 2020 minutes after it took off from Tehran, downing the plane and killing all 176 people aboard. The act took place hours after Iran had fired ballistic missiles at US bases in Iraq and was expecting a possible military response, but it failed to close the civilian airspace.

Since the tragedy, Iran has refused an independent investigation and according to Ukraine and Canada that had dozens of citizens and permanent residents aboard, has not provided full and convincing answers to questions that can shed light as to what really happened.

“Canada remains committed to seeking answers and pursuing justice for this tragedy for the victims and their families. This includes working vigorously with our partners in the International Coordination and Response Group to hold Iran accountable…and ensuring that Iran makes full reparations for the harm caused to the victims, their grieving families and the affected states,” Kung told Iran International.

A Canadian court just recently awarded C$107 million ($84 million) to the families of six people who had sued Iran. More court cases are pending in Canada.

Iran has said it would pay $150,000 per victim to families, but many say what they really want is the truth of who is responsible for the tragedy. Tehran, meanwhile, has said that senior officials cannot be legally held responsible.

Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Ukraine which are four countries with the greatest number of victims have formed the International Coordination and Response Group to support families of victims of flight PS752. They announced this week that seeing intransigence by Iran, they will pursue the case according to international law.

“Moving forward, the group will focus on subsequent actions to resolve this matter in accordance with international law. At this time, we cannot comment on the specifics of our legal strategy,” the Canadian official said.

Taliban Foreign Minister Arrives In Iran For First Official Visit

Jan 8, 2022, 16:25 GMT+0

Taliban's acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has arrived in Tehran at the head of a high-ranking delegation to hold talks with senior Iranian officials.

The spokesman of Taliban’s ministry of foreign affairs, Abdul Qahar Balkhi, said in a tweet on Saturday afternoon that Muttaqi’s first official visit was upon an invitation from Iran.

During the stay, the Taliban delegation is slated to discuss a wide range of political and economic topics as well as issues related to the transit of goods and Afghan refugees.

Before departing for Tehran, the Afghan delegation held a preliminary meeting in the 19th Century Storai Palace, to assess their agenda of their visit to Iran.

In December, Iran proposed that Muslim states establish a joint fund to help stabilize Afghanistan and prevent a serious crisis from impacting other regional countries.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian at the time also stated that sustainable calm in Afghanistan is only possible through an inclusive and effective government in which all ethnic and religious groups would be present.

Tehran insists that despite an economic crisis due to US sanctions, it has accepted more than 300,000 Afghan refugees following the collapse of the government in Kabul. However, the International Organization for Migration said in November that Iranian and Pakistani authorities have sent back more than one million Afghan refugees this year.

Hamburg Shura Removes Iran Islamic Center From Executive Board

Jan 8, 2022, 12:47 GMT+0

An Islamic organization in Germany has removed the Hamburg Islamic Center from its board of directors for supporting Qasem Soleimani and allegations that the center is Iran’s “long terrorist arm” in Europe.

The Hamburg Shura Council, an association of Muslim organizations that represents around 40 mosque communities and other Islamic institutions in the city, made the move after German intelligence sources confirmed connections to Iran’s leader Ali Khamenei as well as Hezbollah that are both designated as terrorist entities by the US and EU.

According to a report by German daily Die Welt, the new head of the Shura executive board, Fatih Yildiz, said their board of directors was restructured in November and the Hamburg Islamic Center is no longer represented. However, the center, known by its German abbreviation IZH for Islamische Zentrum Hamburg and its Blue Mosque are not completely expelled from the Shura Council.

According to a 2021 report by Philipp Wolden, the managing editor of Die Welt Hamburg, the IZH is Iran’s most “important propaganda center" in Europe, and it sends busloads of pro-Iranian and pro-Hezbollah activists to Berlin to participate in the annual al-Quds rallies.

In July, the German Office for the Protection of the Constitution also found evidence that the head of the IZH, Mohammad Hadi Mofatteh, is himself a member of the Revolutionary Guards.

US Envoy For Iran Briefs Saudi Diplomat On Vienna Talks

Jan 8, 2022, 09:31 GMT+0

US Special Envoy for Iran Rob Malley has met with Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the international organizations to discuss the latest developments in Iran nuclear talks.

Prince Abdullah bin Khalid Al Saud met Malley on Friday after separate meetings with representatives of France and Russia this week.

The US State Department said earlier in the week that such periodic meetings “are part of the US commitment to consulting closely with our regional partners on the ongoing talks”.

Russian chief negotiator Mikhail Ulyanov tweeted a photo of his meetingwith the Saudi envoy, saying that he briefed the Saudi side on the latest developments in the Vienna talks.

Last week, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud reiterated Riyadh’s concerns about Iran’s “destabilizing role” and “transgressions” in its nuclear program.

Riyadh and Tehran held talks last year to reduce tensions with the aim of restoring diplomatic ties broken since January 2016. So far, the talks have been exploratory with no tangible results.

The eighth round of talks to salvage the 2015 nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Actions, is underway in Vienna. However, Iranian and US officials don’t meet face-to-face, communicating through other participants.
